When residents of Texas like you get involved in an incident leading to head injury, your life may undergo enormous changes. The recovery process looks different for everyone, as do the effect of the injuries you suffer from.
One of the effects is the possibility of your personality changing due to a TBI. This is subject to infrequent discussion, but it is more common than you may think.
Areas of your brain affect your personality
Mayo Clinic examines the impact traumatic brain injuries have on victims. TBIs can affect everything from your physical senses to your nerves to your memory. It can also change your personality, but how?
Simply put, certain areas of your brain manage parts of your personality. For example, the frontal lobe is the area of your brain that controls self-regulation. It is this part that tells you that something is a bad idea and warns you against acting rashly.
What changes are most common?
When the frontal lobe suffers from damage, your ability to self-regulate can also suffer. For many victims, this means behaving in an uninhibited, thoughtless way. You may say things without thinking or do things without considering the consequences.
This often ties into your temper, too. Victims with an injured frontal lobe tend to have a harder time controlling their anger. This means they may lash out at loved ones and suffer from outbursts without warning. These outbursts can even contain violence.
Thoughtlessness and anger are often jarring symptoms of TBIs that your loved ones likely are not ready to face. This is especially true if you are known for having a lot of patience or a long fuse. It is just one of many things that can make the recovery process tough for everyone.
